Synthetic Fibers

Synthetic fibers are scientifically made to improve upon naturally occurring fibers. Most synthetic fibers are petroleum based. Synthetic fibers include: acrylic, aramid, carbon, microfiber, nylon, olefin, polyester, polyethylene, spandex, tencel, vinalon, and zylon.

Synthetic fibers have been gaining on cotton for world market share; however, cotton still makes up over 39% of the world fiber market. Since synthetic fibers are mostly petroleum based their price and competitiveness depends on the price of oil.
